Ioannis Gkaranis was born and raised in the city of Komotini and he is a graduate of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science

He holds a master’s degreeof theDepartment of Physical Education and Sport Science (TEFAA) of Komotini in the Field of Physical Activity and Recreation.

 He worked as a coach at the Komotini Swimming Club during the period 1988-1995 and as a physical education teacher in training programs of Social Services of Prefecture.

From 1993 until today, he is professionally active as an owner of a gym.

He was elected as member of the board to theChamber of Commerce of Rodopi (E.B.E Rodopis) and Vice-President in the Professionals’ sector in the period 2006-2010

 He was representative of the Panhellenic association of gyms PA.SY.GY for the licensing of gyms businesses.

 He was elected as president of the association of gym owners and professional gymnasts of Rodopi.

 He was elected as Municipal Councilor of the Municipality of Komotini in 2011.

 He was appointed as Deputy Mayor in Social Services of the Municipality of Komotini in 2013, position which served for many years.

In the municipal elections of 2019, he was elected Mayor of Komotini.
