Ministry of Citizen Protection

Michalis Chrysochoidis possesses a diverse and extensive background in security policy, energy, infrastructure, markets, and trade. He has been elected and served for numerous years as a Member of the Greek Parliament. Throughout his career, he has held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Health, Citizen Protection, Infrastructures, Transports and Networks, Growth, Competitiveness and Shipping, and Deputy Minister for Growth and Trade.
Notably, he holds the record for being the longest-serving Minister in charge of Internal Security. His terms have been characterized by significant modernization programs for Public Security and Services, the reorganization of the Hellenic Police, crime-fighting initiatives, reforming anti-terrorist policies, and protecting borders. These efforts have included extensive European and international collaborations, encompassing education and training programs, information exchange, and technological support for the Hellenic Police.
One of the key achievements during his tenure was the successful counterterrorism efforts, leading to the referral to trial and conviction of members of the terrorist organization “Revolutionary Organization 17N.” Electronic border surveillance systems and fences were constructed and activated on the eastern border of the country with Turkey.
In the Government formed in June 2023, Michalis Chrysochoidis was appointed to the Ministry of Health, where he prioritized the reform of the National Health System with a focus on patient care and the enhancement of health services. He also oversaw the restructuring of the National Emergency Service and the establishment of a network of Care Units for strokes, dementia, and trauma.
Under his leadership, the Mental Health Reform, pending for 30 years, was finally completed, and the groundwork was laid for the creation of Greece’s new Health Map. Importantly, he obtained funding through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) for the modernization and renovation of public health structures, including hospitals and health centers, as well as their medical equipment.
He resumed the position of the Minister of Citizen Protection, for the 5th time, in January 2024.
